Episode Description

Elan Halpern, co-founder of Sourmilk, doesn't sugarcoat it: at the early stages of retail distribution, brands are often flying blind. In this episode of Know Thy Shelf, Elan and Jordan unpack what data visibility actually looks like when you're working with local independent distributors in New York, and why the gap between what a distributor knows and what a brand knows quietly works against you at every level, from event planning to customer communication to understanding your own velocity.

For founders navigating their first distributor relationships, this is a candid, real-time look at the data landscape before you reach Whole Foods scale.

Key Insights & Quotes
“I didn’t want people to know it was mine. I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me.”
“If I go up to a grocery store and say, ‘Hey, if you carry this product, I will buy it from you,’ that’s a whole different messaging than a founder coming to a grocery store.”
About the Guest
Elan Halpern
Co-founder, Sourmilk

Elan Halpern is the co-founder of Sourmilk, a New York-based probiotic Greek yogurt brand built to deliver supplement-level gut health benefits through a food people already eat every day. A Stanford computer science graduate who worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant before college and spent her early career as a product manager in tech, Elan spent years making her own yogurt at home before turning it into a business with her Stanford roommate and best friend, Kiki Couchman.

The two quit their jobs in tech and private equity in early 2025, built a following by hand-delivering thousands of yogurt cups across New York City in brown paper bags, and rebranded in fourteen days after receiving a cease-and-desist. Sourmilk launched in its first grocery store in November 2025 and reached 100+ retail doors across New York within six months, with Elan and Kiki managing distribution, shelf-life logistics, and brand building largely themselves.
