Episode Description

Building a CPG brand to 300+ store doors without a broker sounds like a success story. And it is. But the gap between getting on the shelf and staying on the shelf is where most emerging brands quietly lose. In this episode of Know Thy Shelf, Wynn Austin, founder of Wynn's Kitchen, shares how she took a pot of homemade satay sauce from her San Diego kitchen to Erewhon, Bristol Farms, and Mother's Market across Southern California by pitching buyers directly and grinding through demos.

This conversation is for any founder who landed a retail placement and assumed the hard part was over.

Key Insights & Quotes

About the Guest
Wynn Austin
Founder, Wynn's Kitchen

Wynn Austin is the founder and CEO of Wynn's Kitchen, a San Diego-based line of clean-label Asian sauces inspired by the Vietnamese flavors she grew up with. Born in Vietnam and raised in Southern California, Wynn started the brand by accident in 2016, cooking up a better-for-you version of her favorite saté chili sauce in her home kitchen after finding nothing on shelves made without added sugar, soy, or gluten. She officially launched in 2019, hand-labeling jars for neighbors before pitching retail buyers directly without a broker.

Today Wynn's Kitchen is carried in 300+ store doors including Erewhon, Bristol Farms, and Mother's Market. A single mom when she launched, Wynn has been featured in Forbes, spoken at the USC Marshall Global Supply Chain Summit, and hosts her own podcast for CPG founders.
